Prior to May of 1998 my site was at http://members.aol.com/ebtex/ . I have no way of knowing how my stats faired in the years 1996 and 1997. Probably somewhat better in April of 98 than in May '98 since the search engines did not link to my http://ebtx.com site for some time
MegaBytes sent On 9NetAve in 1998 May 32 June 37 July 49 August 45 September 44 October 93 November 113 December "unknown - maybe pre-Y2K glitch"I've started using the "Urchin" statistics package (as of mid-Dec) offered by Verio which has bought out Hiway. So I've gone back to some previous available months (above) and inserted the 'visitors' & hits column. The term "visitor" is loosely defined as the use of an IP address with less than a 30 minute break between another use of the same address. When that address is used again after the elapse of at least 30 minutes, it is counted as a new visitor. I don't agree with the numbers generated. Based on my own investigation, I think that the number of visitors should be less with more pageviews per visitor (depth of visit). Urchin apparently also counts a "bot" as a visitor. I don't. Whatever : - [ ----2002---- megabytes - page views - visitors - hits x1000 January 936 - 80654 - 28640 - 201 February 891 - 79304 - 28083 - 195 March 934 - 75240 - 32955 - 201 April 1.086.G - 84474 - 31833 - 224 May 1.015 G - 83600 - 32521 - 211 June 846 - 69161 - 26443 - 180 July 924 - 79748 - 29420 - 180 August 1.106 G - 105368 - 33635 - 220 September 1.222 G - 93112 - 36310 - 266 October 1.253 G - 102936 - 42367 - 289 November 1.187 G - 90496 - 36590 - 296 December 1.228 G - 98053 - 33603 - 286 Total ----- 12.5 G - 1,042,146 - 391,400 - 2,754,341My stats for March 2006 are severely skewed due to robot activity, chiefly crawlers which are now one of the main constituents of overall Web traffic. The worst offender by far appears to be Yahoo's Slurp crawler which accounts for fully half of all crawler activity. Hence, in the future, I shall have to estimate my totals based on a reduction percentage from robot hits and bytes (my stats program does not give me a number for robot "sessions" so I am guessing that the number of sessions will be roughly equal to the percentage of hits and bytes which themselves are roughly equal. It appears that these 'bots are spoofing regular users by taking new IP addresses every couple of pages that they "slurp". This has the effect of making a web site appear to get more traffic than it is really getting. Yahoo is known for such underhanded tactics from their Geocities web farm where I once had my web site. They put a hit counter on my site without my consent and ran it up to look more active than it really was. It is possible that my stats have been overestimated for years, but they only became ridiculously obvious this month. It is abundantly clear to me now that stats are now all but completely unreliable. In fact, I may soon abandon keeping them at all.
April 2.03 - 149 - 62058 - 405
May 2.63 - 161 - 66422 - 484 - (est. 'bot act. 20%)
June 2.20 - 120 - 58029 - 379 - (by robots 21%)
July 2.21 - 159 - 53770 - 391 - (bot 855mb 38%)
August 1.90 - 119 - 43725 - 350 - (bot 597mb 31%)
September 2.25 - 115 - 57561 - 368 - (bot 396mb 18%)
October 2.44 - 128 - 62026 - 400 - (bot 445mb 18%)
November 1.81 - 97 - 46619 - 286 - (bot 436mb 24%)
^ this month ^ Verio lost 7 days of stats ... so it's short about 25%
December 2.95 - 138 - 70598 - 420 - (bot 540mb 18%)
2006 year's stats are all lost at Verio. It has part NOV and all DEC only.
So, they were added from the above months by me.
Gigs Pageviews Visitors Hits
Total 2006: 26.62 - 1,668,000 - ~704,000 - ~4,700,000
In general, my stats are declining this year :o(
In part, this is due to my "robots.txt" exclusion (put in this year).
This month I switched from Verio hosting which had pretty much collapsed to
1&1 hosting for $4.99 per month (instead of $24.99 for bad verio service).
Everything is working fine but my stats program is different and I'll be entering
nothing for this month. I expect it was similar to February's totals anyway.
In the future I shall just enter visitors and pageviews. My stats appear to have
leveled off so it really doesn't matter anymore.
It's just a perfunctory exercise in futility anyway ;o)
